Return Jet

I have seen some return jets in photos of aquarium builds and they are dual returns with each 1 pointing a different direction. Is this a dual return or is it a "Y" of the plumbing to 2 separate returns? I am wanting to do duals to help spread the return flow.

It could be either. For the ones that split they usually use locline:

...Mine is NOT split but I use locline because it makes it easy to point the return near the surface so I don't need a siphon break hole.

Hopefully this isn't hijacking. But what about those units that have a oscillating spout. Always thought they were neat. One spout but it mechanically moves back and forth. Any one know what they are called or the company that makes those.

..I used one on my closed loop quite a few years ago. Just threw the last one out this morning. ...it was sitting in a box too long and didn't turn anymore.

Almost all returns run off one pump, so no matter how many nozzles they have, they are all "Y" somewhere, it might have a Y under the tank that feeds to pipes, or it might be a single pipe that has a Y at the top of the water to split it. some tanks have several differnt Ys that feed all sorts of stuff...

OK, thanks for the info everyone. It just looked like they were connected to each other and the "Y" was at the base. Thanks again!

Hmmmm, the one that moves sounds pretty cool. I will look into that one. The less things hanging in my tank the happier I am!

On 2nd thought, I would rather stand next to my tank and move the nozzle myself for that price.......

There is also the SCWD (or Squid as it's pronounced).
Much less expensive, but works of the pump to move it so the pump needs to be pretty strong.

I actually have never tried it, but looked into it seriously at one point.
I didn't have a strong enough pump.

Has a decent price tag but I am unsure if it would work with my mag 5 return pump. I think I'm pushing 325GPH out the return.

Yeah That might not be enough.
When I spoke to the manufacturer about it on my 55 with a QuiteOne 3000 pump putting out a listed 780GPH they said it would work, but the rotation of the unit would be slow there by giving you a slower movement.

For changing water movements powerheads on controllers are more efficient. You can split your return and put two sets of loc-line on opposite ends of your tank or run one return and split the locline if you have only one return point. Or just one return and no split which is what I have.

I remember when these first came out:
http://www.oceansmotions.com/store/p...7f095849e2af46
..and they were all the rage for closed loops, but that's back before seio came up with that cannon of a broad water mover that was then followed up with things like vortech and koralias making the external moving wavemakers like ocean motion, sea swirl and squids almost obsolete. ...or atleast gave us a better and/or cheaper option with less moving parts to fail.

I noticed OM doesn't even offer half the stuff they use to: 8-ways, squirt, super squirt....all gone.

LMBO, I haven't even looked at it but from your reaction i dont need to. Forgot about the scwd, never knew people were calling it the squid. You would think with all the science that goes into water movement, whether industrial, commercial, or other, we would have better technology produce flow. I mean even thw mp40 is still a prop that speeds up and slows down, nothing new there. I think alot of companies jumped on the lighting wagon, and sort of forgot about flow.

Think when i get home ill turn my return line in the other direction, oh man that cracks me up.
