Noob....standpipe heights
I am plumbing a Beananimal in my overflow soon. I know that the full flow drain should be elevated off the bottom of the overflow and have a strainer. I also know that the trickle drain should be several inches taller, and the emergency should be even taller. Question is, how do I choose the lengths? Is it somewhat arbitrary?
I imagine that the volume of water in the overflow between the trickle drain top and the full drain top needs to fit in my sump as added volume when the pump turns off...is that correct? Do I also need room in the sump for volume between the emergency top and the full drain top? I assume I do to be absolutely safe....?

Sounds more like a herbie, Bean Animals drill the side of the tank not the bottom. The trickly drain should be about 1/4" below your overflow height. The height of the full flow drain should be 6" below the water line in your overflow, it can be higher, can be lower but 6" is a great location. Adjust the gate valve so the water level in the overflow is just below or right at the trickly drain.
If you are doing a BeanAnimal follow his example all three holes at the same level with 90 elbows to set the three drains. For sump volume you need to add all trickle to full flow area, and about 1/4" in the display tank. Do not need to add anything as the emergency is supposed to be dry, but like you said better to be conservative so add the number's anyway and add another 20%. |
