Ideas, help please, skimmer spilling over!!!!

My 5 year old very stable reef is from overnight (tuesday) to cloudy, protein skimmer is spilling over(wedensday) , from a usual water change. At night (tues)things great, in a.m. (Wed) Room smelled fishy, protein skimmer spilling over, all the reef stuff is not looking good... I have since done two 1/3 water changes( yesterday), tank is still putting out high skim outflow plus tank still cloudy. I am thinking my live rock is dying for something casing a huge load and bacterial bloom. Normally very stable tank.be sides the obvious any people have similar things happen........? Thanks guys for any insit

Sounds like bacterial bloom as well.

Anything new getting added to the tank, new type of food or additive?

You doing any work in the house? Painting, carpet cleaning, air fresheners, ect...
My skimmer went crazy when using the powdered carpet freshener in the house, fortunately it didn't cause any other issues.

No chemicals, the powder buffer is probably the culprit, normally when i add it, i can tell its not liked, maybe this time it was to much.....

A simple change in salinity or change in water cleanliness will make the skimmer go haywire. You will just need to re-adjust the skimmer till things return back to normal.

Can't think of any buffer that is put into our tanks dry, you usually have to pre-mix it first.

try cleaning the air intake on the pump sometimes gunk gets trapped in there and can cause a skimmer to go nuts
