RIO 2500 Purchased from 2002
Question how do you know if a rio pump is the bad version? The one I have is only a two-prong. The warning sticker has no UL code listed and says to use a GFCI and no wave makers or timers. Did they revise the rio pumps before or after 2002? I have been using this pump for over 10 years off and on and never realized the horror stories. Since it lasted this long is there a good chance it is the revised model? If plugged into a GFCI plug will this protect it from blowing up?

Man I'd replace it just for the fact it's 11 years old. It may never have issue, but better safe than sorry....my opinion of course.

I've left it unplugged for nearly six months now for that reason but would be nice using the extra circulation. It's in a place that makes it difficult to remove is why I haven't replaced it. Pain in the rear pulling everything out just to get to it.

Even more reason to get a new one! If its a pain to get it in it would be a pain to replace it if it did fail. Jmo!

Rio's reputation is the worse.
One of those exploded in one of my systems about 15 years ago. Never again!!!! I actually saw the fire as I was passing by the tank!!! Smoke was above the water surface just after the explosion! Very scary stuff! Please tell me you're tossing that beast and getting a decent pump instead. Grandis.
