Help with a fluval 304

I just got a used fluval 304 to help clean a tank that I haven't plumbed yet. The shaft is busted and I don't understand the assembly. I think I got the wrong shaft as it has a squared yellow holder, but the only other shaft I see is just a shaft. What's the yellow tube next to the shaft?
