Is there a way to test if a protein skimmer works before buying it?

I'm planning on buying a used protein skimmer from craigslist from a guy that is piecing his tank out. Is there a way that I can test that it works before buying it? I read one post that said I can test it in a bucket with saltwater. Is that true?

TIA!

Yes. Stick it in a bucket aNd see if the pump works. Thats your biggest concern. If you see bubbles forming, your good.
