Electrical setup

Hello,

I have a question pertaining to methods of setting up electronics.

Is there a preferred surge protector to use that may be a bit safer to have in close proximity? Currently I have wires running to a surge protector sitting outside of my cabinet, though currently I am only powering a skimmer and two return pumps. I would like to build something inside the cabinet that I can integrate these with and also utilize to power my lighting. Not having an extensive knowledge of electricity I want to be sure to do this safely. I have done a bit of searching and read most (if not all) of the stickies, I just want to ensure I do this safely. Any advice or links to useful reads would be greatly appreciated.

More important than a surge protector which will protect your equipment against electrical surges in the grid is having a GFCI installed which will protect YOU from shock or even electrocution. Spills will happen sooner or later. To the best of your ability with your tank set up try to protect the electrical connections and equipment from any possible splash or spill.
