Ecotech circulation pump?

Looking into ecotech pumps, why are so many used pumps for sale? What are pros and cons?

I like mine. It's not noisy like I've heard many claim. Even at full power it's just a slight hum. If you don't maintain it well the wet side assemblies can go bad but hey once a month take the wet side out and soak it in vinegar. I like it. It's a strong pump, well built, good looking, small footprint and all types of neat setting to play with though I keep mine at reef crest about 40% power. Cons are...it's not cheap I guess. I can't really think of much negative.

I have two mp40s on my 48x24x18. They great pumps, but pricey. They move a lot of water and take up no space in the tank.

Mine are noisy only at 100% and anything below that I can't hear them over the overflow and drain in the sump.

For that sized tank you will want to go with 1 MP40 at first then probably add another later on, unless its in the budget then go crazy and get both right away.

I am using 3 large Koralias and 1 small trying to get flow every where. Would it be better to go with 4 small ecotechs

For the price of 4 MP10's you could get 2 MP40's. I'd go with 2 MP40's.

Not really sure why there are so many Vortech pumps for sale - although I don't find the noise irksome, they are not silent, so perhaps that is a partial explanation. Also, newer Chinese knock-offs may have people figuring they'd better sell their Vortechs before the used market collapses. Unclear what the useful life adjusted total cost will be for these Chinese pumps, perhaps less of a savings than people think. Time will tell.

Pros; reliable pumps, multiple flow options, wide flow, great customer support, long lasting, little space is used in the tank

Cons; expensive, humming at full power, very expensive, did I mention expensive

IMO it is better to too much and dial them back then to waste 300 and not have enough flow. For a reference I am running 2 MP40s on a 55, but they are dialed back alot

I've already heard horror stories on the WP pumps. Mainly about loss of power with age. Also I don't see why someone would sell a pump they already have to buy a knock off because it's cheaper(although it's a possibility, people do strange things)

This is probably partially due to the large number sold. I base that on the comparatively huge number of reviews you see on retailer's sites. Ecotech sold a ton of these things. And since they're so expensive, there is a good motivation to go to the trouble of selling one rather than letting it sit in the closet like you might do with a Hydor or something like that. People are always entering & exiting the hobby. Of course the entry of a low cost substitute to the market is a big driver as well...

I agree. The pump is great and in my opinion worth the cost. However there are so many people who enter the hobby and for whatever reason exit. That's why the people that I've seen selling them are most of the time selling other supplies as well. Just trying to get some of their money back when exiting the hobby. Don't worry about spending so much and not getting a great product when it comes to these pumps. They really are the best.
