Please Save My Brain Coral
I bought a red (not open) brain coral at my LFS on wednesday and it has been excreting white stringy stuff the past couple days. I have not been feeding it (is it any frozen food like brine shrimp or is it a specific thing?) and the other corals seem to be fine. i did not dip it when i bought it but i bought coral dip recently
is it sick/dying? is it hungry? what do i do? |

Could it be too much light compared to the tank you got it from?

my open brain looks like that to, brains just don't do well in my tank. besides the lobo is doing good, I hit 2 with too much flow and it almost killed them :/

Well, we don't know what the problem is, the light was just a suggestion. If your water chemistry is the issue, and it is the same in both tanks, moving it won't help. But, generally speaking, LPS don't need/want a lot of light or flow.

I would avoid moving it until you know what the matter is. It may just need time to recover. It seems like you bought an unhealthy coral and now it is trying to recover. What are your water parameters? Temp, alkalinity, ph, calcium, magnesium, nitrites, nitrates and phosphates are the parameters we need to address why the coral is acting up. Other things like flow and lighting can be culprits as well but we need to narrow this down before you do anything hasty such as move the coral to another tank which you stated was different so the coral would have to acclimate once again. If the change is too dramatic it could harm the coral even further. The water doesn't need to be 'perfect' so long as it is stable. In such a small tank, stability may be an issue. How old is the tank it is currently in?

These can be used as a defense mechanism sometimes, other times the coral is just irritated. Assuming your parameters are within reason and the lighting is on the level, it should bounce back to normal in no time. No worries... |
