How To Breed Tangs???!

I have been doing research and realize its a challenge, but i would love to actually learn more about it. So whats the basics, requirements, tips, anything really! Thanks.

i didint think it could be done but i did find a post where someone did harvest the eggs, but he wasnt able to make the fry survive or something like that. Let me find it.

It's been a while back, but I think I remember reading that some large aquariums have seen them spawn - but that's with LOTS of water quantity, and a lot of vertical height which may be needed for their 'mating dance'. I don't know if any of that's true though. It'd be sweet if someone could pull it off, though.

CaptCrash is on an local aussie forum named Reefing The Australian Way. A few weeks ago he had a break in in his fish room and someone knocked things around a bit and turned off everything on him. Once again proving my axiom: "People Suck"

A major set back.

You might also want to try looking at the Rising Tide Conservation web site. They also are working with Blue Hippo and Yello tangs, Banner fish, large angelfish as well as several other "difficult to impossible to breed" fish and inverts.

I firmly believe that there is no "magic bullet" when breeding these fishes. What works for the 1st stage of development might not work all the way thru meta. There must be several prey/nutritional requirements/stages as these fishes go thru these early stages of development. Why else would several researchers reach the near same results/blocks?

Rising Tide has had success in bringing some species thru meta but they were using wild caught plankton at the time and were unable to determine with a certianty what those fishes were eating to get them thru.

For the most part it would be difficult for the hobbyist to even be able to have a tank large enough to be able to get tangs to spawn. However there are large aquariums at zoo's and stuff that have them spawn all the time and there is a lot of scientist's and researchers that collect those eggs and try to raise the fry. The longest anybody has been able to keep a fry going to my knowledge is around 72 days and that was a guy over in Japan. Most people don't get them past two weeks. The reason for this is because they are having a very hard time trying to figure out the right foods to feed the fry. But they have been coming along with this rather quickly and in my opinion it is only going to be a few years until somebody figures it and is successful at raising tang fry

Massive news, I saw my Blue Tangs start to spawn again and was able to collect some eggs. All three were involved in the spawning activity so Im not sure who actually did the deed.

Im not sure if the eggs have been fertilised or not

Even if they are not, I am super excited to now have spawning tangs again

I think we are a few years away from breeding tangs in our basement. But hopefully aquaculture facilities will start working on it now. I think the Gem tang would be a great fish to start with due to its high price right now.
