You can buy live rock any time you want, as long as you have the right tank parameters to support it. Meaning the bacteria in the live rock will need a source of ammonia and nitrate to keep doing their thing. If you were to get live rock and put it in a super clean system, the bacteria in the live rock would have no source of nutrients to survive on. Now, it doesn't take a lot of nutrients to support the live rock, the bacteria in your tank will always be shifting with the amount of nutrients you have in your tank. Perfect example is the reason we add fish slowly, gives the bacteria a change to catch up to the added nutrients.

K, think I'll add fish food first and then get live rock so there nutrients for the organisms.
