I want a clam sooooo bad, but I'm afraid of them. From what I've read, it seems as thought they are very difficult to keep?

if you have an established tank they are not that difficult at all. They do not do well in new tanks.

I was at the CT frag farmers market last year and they had amazing clams but I only had an 8 g at the time so I couldnt buy one. Now that I am upgrading just in time for this years festivities I will be making a purchase or two for sure.

Just remember that the pics you are going to see online are almost always taken top down. The color of the clam will look drastically more dull when viewing through the glass.

I bought my Pacific East Aquaculture (Dr. Mac's) maxima at the end of March 2012. Plopped him in a not very well established 75g under Tek 6-bulb T5s and PAR38 LED (for about 8 mos), then moved him to a temporary 15g tank under the same PAR38 (also for about 8 mos). Now he's been in a 40b for a few months under a chinese LED fixture and is still doing very well.

Much hardier clam than I thought, if it can survive me. One of my favorite pics (it's blue from all other angles...):

Clams are easy to keep, with a few qualifications. You need intense lighting, and good water quality parameters, though nothing more than is required for keeping most stony corals. You also need compatible fish species - some pygmy angels will "worry" a clam to death.

One other note is that small clams have a reputation as more troublesome to keep than larger specimens, and my own experience dovetails with this. "Small" generally means less 3" in length in any of the species.

If you want to read up on them, the book "Giant Clams in the Sea and in the Aquarium" is a very good book with a great deal of compiled knowledge.

What sort of clams? Some species are easy to get - Maximas, Derasas and Squamosas come to mind. Croceas are a little less common, though still available from on-line retailers like Live Aquaria. Gigas seems to be non-existent - I've been looking for one for several months without success. I've been told that one of the reasons for the different availability of the different species has to do with several pacific storms that did a lot of damage to clam aquaculture facilities in the last couple of years.

I could be wrong, but I believe most aquacultured gigas are being used to help repopulate at this point.

My LFS had one about 2 months ago and it was a monster. I think it was around 12-14" and someone ended up buying it for $600. It was nice, but IMO not $600 nice.

If you have a lower light go with a dersa. My photon 48 on a 75 it to much for mine. It goes and hides partially under a cave. Sometimes its completely in the cave
