Unhappy Reef Octopus DC-3500

I bought one of these pumps from MD to replace an old T4 pump, I need the small footprint due to the layout of my sump/stand area. I got this because the description says it can be used internal or external. There seems to be conflicting info from the website and manual included, also a phone call to MD they said submersed only. I am still not sure, is there anyone using one of these pumps external? MD gave me a return # but I would like to use it as I have time to plumb over holiday, so anyone who can say I appreciate
