Ran into the same problem as you with a used craigslist tank I bought. I looked on google and found that people had tried turtle wax rubbing compound on the OUTSIDE ONLY. No one has tried it on the inside, and neither did I. It takes a lot of rubbing, but I got most of the water spots to disappear to the point of toleration. I did not spend a lot of time or elbow grease though. I think if you used it hard enough and really spent hours on it, you might make them go away completely. Good luck.

If its got a hazy look to the glass, its probably microscopic damage that's not fixable.

If you can lay it on its side, then I've had pretty decent luck with soaking towels in vinegar and leaving it on the stains for a while.

Might also be able to fill the tank and run it with a vinegar/water mixture for a while. That might take a lot of vinegar depending on the size.

The acid magic I posted above is much safer than muriatic acid and faster than vinegar.
Apply it with a clean paint brush and wipe it off - done.

What is it? I looked at the page, but it didn't have any actual info on what was in the bottle.
