Pods?
Ok so I'm new... I've read and read and read. I've learned a LOT but I kinda have a question about pods....
In just about EVERY video I watch on YouTube of tanks cycling I see what seems like copepods on the glass (white spots). I'm nearly 3 weeks completed of my cycle and the only pod I have is a single amphipod that came on my LR. My LR was "cured" from the LFS and I noticed no copepods in their system.. Is it normal to not have any? Do all these other people just get better LR? Or are they purchasing pods? I realize SOME people purchase pods when they need to use them as food... but for crying out loud other than nuisance garbage I haven't gotten ANYTHING good from my LR. So far I got.... 3 bubbles of bubble algae MANY Syllid Worms 1 Chiton (looks like a potato bug) 1 Amphipod 1 Vermetid Snail (yet to be determined but 99% sure) I'm kinda bummed actually.... I figured I'd see some mini stars... copepods all over my glass... maybe some tiny shrimp of sorts... I only have a 15 gal nano though so I guess my chances of GOOD hitchhikers are lower than someone buying 100 lbs + of LR... Menace |

welcome to the hobby, just give it some time. sometimes these guys hide very well or are so tiny to start with. I didnt notice my first pods till about a month after adding my first corals to freshly cycled tank (from all dry rock/sand).
I found one tiny brittle star after dipping a coral frag and dropped him in the tank. now a year later found 10 tiny brittle stars while cleaning out green hair algea. my green mandarin has been taking care of the pods.

There is the good and the bad when you get hitchhikers. Some people get a ton of them while others get none.
As for copepods, you might just want to buy some for your tank. They really need a place to live that is away from the rest of the tank like a refugium.

Try checking at night with a flashlight...I had one tank that would be crawling with them only when the lights were out.

You probably will only see them at night when there predators are sleeping.

Well I have a dim blue "moonlight" that is a 12" neon tube. Very little light but I see NOTHING other than my syllids and when I'm lucky my amphipod or chiton. I guess I just didn't get anything "fun" on this batch of rock. Oh well... when the time comes I might get lucky and get something on a coral frag. (Still a LONG ways away from that.... don't even have CUC in the tank yet)
Thx for the info. Menace |
