Filter Placement..?

I have a questions about a good place for a filter pad .... or if I should not even run it.....right now I have a filter sock with 3 drains and my water change tube going into it. This is in the skimmer section of my sump...(skimmer / fuge / return). Right now I have also put a filter pad in the baffle after the fuge / going into the return section to help get the fines out. I am wanting to know if I should build a holder so I can lay a larger section of filter across the top of my fuge..? thank you
