ok i know this sounds silly but...

How much wall clearance between my tank and the wall behind it will I need for the Eshopps PSK 100?

I have a few inches but didn't take into account for a HOB skimmer. How big is the this thing??

Thanks and I promise that's the only silly question...

I have my tank six inches from the wall, just so I can have room to reach back there. But, some people don't like to have that much space because of the look. The average is about 2-4 inches. But, like you said, if you have a large hangover, you may not have much choice.

Don't do it... Invest in a sump you'll thank yourself later. These things ridiculously unsafe. They always find worse time to overflow and making a mess in your room. I would run tank without skimmer using other methods (like algae scrubber, canister etc) then run it with hangover skimmer.

The skimmer will overflow? How is that unless you never change the collection cup? My skimmer has been running for months and never comes even close to overflowing....

and to answer the OP, you would need to confirm the dimensions of the skimmer but I think 4" from the wall would suffice. MY question is, the Eshopps PSK 100 looks to be specifically an in sump design...were you planning on Modding it for HOB?

happened to me twice. If the level flucuates in the tank a little bit(varying levels of evaporation unless you have an auto top off but even then your top off could fail) it will affect the skimmer performance(bubble level) leading you to make an adjustment and when the tank level changes again boom overflow just after youve gone to bed.
It will save you alot of trouble and money if you just get a sump, vinyl tube and a small return pump. Even if it is just for your skimmer with nothing else in it, it will save you in the long run.

you are a very lucky man... Even the best skimmer on the market can overflow due to unstable water level or some change in water chemistry or just from 'forgetting to check it out'. Cheap product like coralife garbage have mind of it's own and can overflow without any reason at all...
To OP - invest in a sump. There are many benefits to run system with sump.

I run a HOB on my current tank with no issues. It is true that the collection cup can overflow if you are not paying attention. We went on vacation and I forgot to turn off the skimmer and came back to a mess.

With that being said as long as you are on top of things I don't see an issue with HOB, lots of people run them.

A sump and internal skimmer is a "nicer" option for looks and ease of mind.

I was just doing some quick searching Sgt, and found a thread on intank skimmers.
Led me to the Tunze website. Looks like they have a nice variety of in-tank skimmers, for what I would guess are reasonable prices.
Anyone else have thoughts on Tunze equipment?
