Thinking about starting a Saltwater Aquarium
From what I've read so far, it is generally recommended that a large aquarium be used to create an environment that is easier to manage. I'm a little limited on space an although I would like to get a 55+ gallon tank, it would be difficult. Does anybody know if it is possible to get a smaller 40g tank with a larger sump to increase overall water volume, and if that would stabilize the environment?

The larger water volume will make for a more stable environment.
Are you planning on a basement sump? If not, its not possible to get any thing under the stand that is larger than the display tank. |

I'll probably stick with a sump in the stand, and I may just try to work out a better location. Do you have any recommendations on sump size?

Your sump should be as large as possible with a small tank. Basically whatever you can fit in the stand.
