How many fish in a 35 gallon tank
What is the maximum amount of fish that i can put in a 35 gallon tank? I currently have 2 small clowns (about 1 inch in length) , a regal tang which is slightly bigger than the clowns.. along with a small molly and a red fire shrimp. I also have a pink spotted goby which is roughly over 2 inches in length. How many more can i add?(presuming i only add small fish) I also plan on adding a baby mandarin after 6 months or more, if all goes well

I would say you are done. Those fish may be small now but they do grow. The tang will soon outgrow that tank altogether. If you wanted you could possibly do some other shrimp.

+1 on no more fish. With bigger bioloads, even relatively minor fluctuations can upset the balance and stress fishes.

I don't think a mandarin would do well in a 35g tank unless you have a huge sump where pods are being bred. Mandarins eat tons of pods and I just don't think most nano tanks would ever be able to support their appetite unless they have a large sump attached to them.
Also, keep an eye on that regal tang. They get up to a foot in length, and I believe you will likely start seeing aggression issues with that tang in such a small tank. There is a reason why they are suggested for 180g+ aquariums. Tangs can get fairly aggressive when housed in too-small aquariums. And aggression issues can pop up out of the blue. It might be fine one day and the next day you might find it beating the crap out of your other fish. Just pay good attention to it. If you start seeing it being aggressive to tank mates, remove it immediately or you might suffer many fish casualties. And with that regal tang in there, you are already at max bioload. I think if you were to remove the tang that you could add a couple more small fish. But no more fish if the tang stays. |

Your LFS wants to sell you fish.
A 35 will practically never sustain a mandarin unless you get incredibly lucky and get one that eats dead food. I am sorry but like so many others we are tired of seeing people kill fish. Mandarins are not for small tanks, they just are not. You have already been told this elsewhere on the forum. When someone posts a question on an open forum they should expect people to comment, good or bad. If you really are so new that a regal tang and a mandarin are in mind (and you want to add even more) for a 35 and you really really have no idea what you are saying is like cramming 30 Saint Bernards in a dog house then I apologize, otherwise this seems like trolling, hence the not so positive comment. i believe with the size of tank its already at max and again tang doesnt need to be in there. i know u said u will move it out, my feeling is that it probably wont survive at the size u mentioned. tangs under 2-3" have very low survival rateand more worse in a small tank like urs.
Good luck.

I had a mandarin in a 5 month old 36 bow with 10gal sump, figured i had enouph pods to lat him a long time. I tried every method available to train him, although i think he ate live brine he eventually got skinny where his stomach was indented.. I brought him back to the lfs, he lasted about 5 happy months before pod pop was decimated... Dont count on training him, chances are he will only eat pods and you will never keep him long term. Imo if u can return him in a few months u can try it but do t let the thing starve to death, and get him extremely fat. As far as the tang, the tang police is guna b reall madd at that one ur not even closeee to the recomended size tank... Theres alot of advice telling u not to get these fish on this site and they are 100% correct. U can do what u want like i did, figured my 55lbs of lr would help some but when i saw my mandarin stressed i quickly returned him

Get rid of the tang & forget about the mandarin. Start researching fish choices that will be more appropriate for your tank size.

Ok guys, i have gotten rid of the tang and am thinking of which 2 fish can be the final additions to my tank.
Will it be safe to add a royal gramma and a yellowhead angelfish? |

Yes to the Royal Gramma, no to the Angelfish. The Angelfish will be very aggressive in a small tank, it requires a 120gallon tank minimum. The Yellowheads are also difficult to keep alive even in a large tank. Unfortunately your tank is too small for any Angelfish, even a dwarf.

Royal Gramma will work nicely. You might even pair it up with another one.
Any angel is out for your tank. You could look into the smaller wrasse's as suitable fish. You could do a pair or trio of yellow coris wrasse's which would be a nice splash of color.
