External MP proposal in ATO Res

First of all, whats up RC!

What do you guys think of running a pump externally inside the sump box where an ATO reservoir would be?

Where as, the sump has the ATO Res built in and the main pump operates outside the main water column. Instead residing in the ATO space while the RODI sits around the pump.

My concern is the pump will raise the RODI water temperature too much with a volume of 5 gallons or so. and result in damage while operating in hot? water.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Details: Fluval SP4 pump, 40B sump w 5gal built in ATO RES

For one, unless your ato pump is running all the time (which it won't be) there won't be any noticeable heat. People already run pumps in and out, with no issues. Maxi jets are placed in the ato container and aqualifters are used outside the container. Neither produce much heat at all.

I think ska misunderstands, assuming you're saying what I think you are. You want to drill your baffle and plumb the main return pump into the ATO chamber. Essentially running your pump like an external pump, but sitting in your rodi reservoir. Interesting idea. Ill be interested to here more experienced reefers chime in on this one.

I apologize for the difficult description, you are correct Portsie. I should have mentioned the drilling the baffle part.
