Does anybody know if there is space to drill a small hole on the side of this fixture? I want to mount a diy led strip to the side. When I say side I mean the long way. Not the ends. I don't want to hit wires or anything.

depends on where you want to drill. The sunpower is extremely easy to work on, just open it up and look where you want drill to see if there are any wires or anything else in the way.
