Trace elements....
Ok. New to this. Started dosing calcium and mag. Reading about a few things out there there are recommendations about dosing and adding trace elements. Yea or nae? I don't see any way of testing for these so I'm not sure how often or if it's even needed.....thoughts?

one rule in this hobby: if you cannot test for it do not add it.
if you do water changes regularly and use a good reputable reef salt then you will not need to dose trace elements. only focus on the big 3, cal alk mag.

My suggestions on what to dose (and what to not bother) are detailed here:

Thanks-that's what I thought, but I wonder then why some resources recommend adding trace elements with specific fish?

The cynical (realistic?) side of me says because more than likely, that resources is also in the business of selling said trace elements. Dosing iodine for "proper molting of crabs and shrimp" is one of the pieces of advice I often see that seems to lead people down a bad path. (Don't, by the way.)
Also... unless you have coral that are consuming calcium/alk/magnesium, which you will know by testing because those levels are decreasing over time, there's really no reason to be dosing cal/alk/mag either. When just starting out, you won't need to dose. Last edited by kurt_n; 06/24/2014 at 08:41 AM. Reason: added comment about cal/alk/mag |

DO you have a link to a fish specific trace element recommendation? I don't recall seeing many of those.

I took a quick look at a bunch of fish there and didn't see such a recommendation, but if they do, it may be intended to be a food supplement, not a tank water supplement.
Do you have a link to one?
