What exactly does the volute do on a pump?
Like those Laguna pond pumps that are fitted with custom volutes by Vertex and others.
What does it do differently? thanks |

well the way these pumps work is the impeller accelerates the water and gives it kinetic energy. The volute is where the water is slowed back down, converting kinetic energy into head (pressure). A custom volute could claim to be more efficient, generating more pressure.

I run a Laguna max-Flo 2400. 2400 gph at 100 watts of power consumption. Another popular pump the Danner mag drive 2400 uses 265 watts

Not at all. The sales pitch is these pumps pay for themselves in energy saving. Check out the specs and compare to others. Mine has been running over two years. I shut it down everyday for 20 minutes for feeding.

The 1500 the 2000 and the 2400 each use 100 watts. The difference is the engineering in the volute design I guess.

Both the mag 2400 and Laguna 2400 drop to 50% at 9 to 10 feet.
Here is mag specs http://www.marinedepot.com/Danner_Ma...DN1133-vi.html |

I actually have a power jet 2400 not a max flo 2400. I'm sure they are the same pump with different attachments. Some forums say the max flo might not have stainless screws. The manufacturers website has no salt water disclaimer. Mine has been running over two years with no issues. That "important info" was from pond USA website and not from the manufacturer Laguna. Here is the official website site. My bad for unofficial link.
