In tank vs HOB refugium?
What is the opinion and experience on these? Does one work better than the other for certain reasons?
My current tank is 29g and only has CUC for now. I don't plan on getting many fish so I feel I could use some space for an in tank refugium. I've also looked into a HOB but it seems like an in tank wouldn't require the maintenance/power an out of tank would. |

A refugium is typically an area that the fish don't have access to that will allow for pods and certain grasses to grow, I am not sure how effective one can be inside a 29 gallon, it will probably work better with a hang on back, or if you have room, a 5 or 10 gallon separate tank setup that is linked to your 29G

I was looking at something like this, or building my own

I looked into a HOB refugium for my 55 gallon tank, but got to thinking, even a 5 gallon HOB refugium is a lot of weight to hang on the back of your tank. I decided to make a DIY sump refugium that I have under my display tank. I'm real happy with it and glad I did because now mu fuge section is big enough for chaeto, pods, LR and sand.
I set it up with an Eshopps overflow, and its working fine....Do yourself a favor and put a sump under your display if you can. Their easy to make...
