MP40 on each side or one MP40 and one MP60
I know its been asked and yes I did search but want to see what yall have to say.
My tank is a 5' long 180 in wall. I currently have 1 MP40 on one end. Should I do another MP40 on the other end or would it be better to do a MP60? On 5 foot I am thinking two MP40's will be fine. I am going bare bottom for the first time so not worried about sand moving. |

Are you using the water flow for the corals or to keep the tank clean?

Two MP40s.
I have a third on back wall in a 225. Plenty of flow. If I did an MP60 it would be way too much. Unless you're bare bottom then you may be able to get away with it but it would probably still be too much. I'm 90% SPS. I have to put my zoas in protected pockets as it is. Depending on your aquascaping you could do a couple of MP10s on back wall for dead spots.

I have two MP40's across from each other in a 4' wide 100gal.tank. They provide more than enough flow. I do have a sandbed and I can only run them at no higher than 40%. I still like having two though because I can take advantage of the EcoSmart modes. My fish love swimming in the strong current that they provide. Something that took me some time to figure out is to run them in anti-sync mode. Otherwise you end up with each half of the tank having their own separate flow patterns. At least that is what I've noticed with my configuration.

For the sand issue .. if it works for you try putting a big rock directly underneath the vortech. It made a huge difference for me. I have fine oolite and it took months for it to really settle down.

I am going bare bottom on my new build. This will be my first bare bottom tank.
So not worried about sand blowing around. But at the same time I don't want to blast corals either. |

I have a BB FOWLR and my MP60s running at around 50% to keep my tank clean. I first tried MP40s ( that was suggested by Ecotech) and was very disappointed with the results. IMO the 60s are a better design than the 40s and if you will be running the 40s at over 75% you are better off getting the 60s and running them at a lower output. ( more quiet and I feel easier on the equipment) I occasionally run the 60s @ 75% on NTM for detritus removal |

My tank is 60 X 30 X 22 and I am running a MP 60 and a MP 40 I had to do a MP 10 for dead spots on back wall. If my tank was 24 or less I could have easily ran 2 mp40s but with the 30" I need every bit of my 60 and am considering replacing my 40 with a 60 to give me orm a wider swath. I also don't like running my 40 at 80% either. Good Luck but remember you can always turn a 60 down but you will have a hell of a time turning a 40 up once it's 80% or more. If you have to run a Vortech past 80% for any length of time you are asking for trouble. IMHO

Mp60s are super super loud. I have 2 brand new ones on a 8' 250g tank, and even on their lowest setting, they have a loud hum. If noise is no problem for you, go with 60s. Other wise u would be better off going with 3+ mp40s

I have a 60 on each side of my 7' tank. I don't run them higher than about 80%.
They're flow monsters. 40's are more than enough for a 5' tank.

To the op... I would probably get another mp40. I love the 60 though. My favorite pump by far.

While I think an MP40wES would definitely suffice, I have to agree with others in saying that I think you'd really enjoy the additional flow of the MP60wES!
Either way, putting one pump on each end of the tank would help to circulate the water in a gyre.

Just wondering, is there any plans for future designs that might make the Vortech pumps quieter? I love the flow of my mp60s, and I love how they take up minimal space inside the tank, BUT I can hear the dry sides hum from 20' down the hall in my bedroom. I know there's pros and cons to everything, but if u could quite down the pumps, I would pay big $$ for that. Lol |

Kinda leaning towards keeping the 40 i have and adding a 60 across from it. I can always run the 60 at a lower setting versus wide open.
Plus as mentioned bare bottom tank. |

I have a 8ft 300 and have a 40 on one side and 60 on other side and they rock.. The 60 blows away the 40 no comparison .. I do get a slight humm out of my 60 only after I clean it of hit it but it quits back down

Well i went ahead and picked up and MP60 today for my on going build.
So will be a 40 on one side and a 60 on the other. Can always dial the 60 down. I feel this was the right choice to make guess time will tell. Not worried about the sound as for its inside a fish room so its closed off. |

Having 3 MP40s I will say it would be nice to have a 60 or two, not necessarily for more every day flow but for an occasional nutrient export it would be really nice.
