40 Gallon with 20 Gallon Sump Help
Hey guys like stated above I need help with my 40 gallon and 20 sump. I'm needing help on my return pump. What would be a great pump to get for this setup? (Price, gph, the quietest). Thank you guys for the help.

Is your 40 reef ready? Drilled or not?

So are you gonna use a HOB overflow or drill it yourself?

I have your same setup and use a Speedwave DC-3000 return pump. I have a short length of reinforced vinyl tubing (available at Lowes and most other major home centers) connected at the barbed outlet using two of those plastic ratcheting clamps, with the other end connected to a PVC barbed fitting with a couple of standard stainless steel clamps (dry). The vinyl tubing cuts down dramatically on the noise, which is next to nothing. I also only run my return pump on the third setting (I believe there are six) and get decent flow. I also have a couple of powerheads in the display, so I figured the third setting was reasonable. I like that the return pump has a 10 minute Feed Mode, which shuts it completely down and auto restarts after 10 minutes. I believe the newer generation of Waveline DC pumps (of which Speedwave may be a clone of the gen 1 Waveline DC pumps) have a longer feed mode, possibly 30 minutes.
I couldn't be happier with my inexpensive Speedwave DC-3000, but the Wavelines are better pumps overall if you are looking for a near silent internal pump for that size tank. |

I used a mag 3 on that exact same setup. Worked great and mag drives, while perhaps a bit antiquated, are work horse pumps that are commonly available at great prices. I never worry about buying a used mag pump as they last FOREVER!!!

If heat is a concern, go with an external pump.
If power is a concern, go with the newer DC pumps. I run a small external panworld on a 40B that has a manifold to run GFO and carbon reactors. It works great and leaves the sump less cluttered. |

Tunze silence or a small Sicce are very good pumps and are adjustable.
