RW-8 or RW15 for 180gallon

Hello all trying to decide on wheather to get a pair of jebao rw-8s or rw-15s for my new 180 gallon tank, I plan on doing mainly LPS.

Thanks for your time!

I don't know what your timeline for buying is but I am picking up two RW-8s for my 180 gallon mixed reef tonight. It will be a few days before I can give a review. FWIW, the advice I got was that the RW15s are really powerful and two of them might be too much for a 180 unless you have a bare bottom tank with SPS.

I am running a rw-8 on a 36" 38gal tank at full speed, I would go for the rw-15's you can always turn them down but you can't give more than max.

If you are getting them, take a look at the JBWave controller it really adds a lot to the pumps.

Hope so! I ordered them right before I got a response back on here. It said they could go as low as 10% flow and they were only $10 more per pump for the RW15s so i got a pair of them. Hopefully it wont be too insane lol. So what is so nice about this JBWave controller? They already have built in wave functions so im not really sure I see the point

I've got 2 RW15's on my 215 (72x24x29). If all you're going to do is LPS the 8's will be more than enough.

I should be able to just run them on a lower setting and be OK right? They were only $10 extra and I figured they would have a wider flow and I didn't want to have the rw 8s not be enough

I have a 180 reef tank. I've tried allot of power heads over the past 8 months

Right now I'm currently using 2 - Jebao RW15's .

Before that I had 2 Jeabo WP40's, one WP40 and 1 WP25 or, 2 WP-25's , all placed on opposite ends of the tank

I also had 2-Vortech MP40Wes on my 180 as well

Currently I run one RW15 as Master, and the other as Slave, just like the Vortechs

If I put them more then 1/2 up, I end up with a sand storm, just like the WP40's

I did the same as you, I bought the RW-15's , and thought its Easier to dial them back. But it would be a bad thing if I didn't have enough using the RW8, or running the RW8 at full power.

I always like to run any power heads at 75% or below

Yes. You can run them way down. But only on certain modes.

I did get courser sand so that should help. So I take it they are working well for you? By the way what mode and level are you running at? Thanks

I only got them last week from Reef Breeders. Unfortunately , I had a bad controller.
Logan is sending me another one. So I haven't got to fully play with them yet

The reason why I went with the RW15's vs the 8's is because the 15's have a broader flow pattern like the Vortechs I had.

The WP25's were putting out a to narrow of a stream, and the flow pattern was to direct

I run a herbie style drain, and had problems balancing the herbie flow running one
WP25 and one WP40 in the weirs

So I had to use the same size , because the more powerful pump would push a wall of water into the opposite weir

I like them over the Vortech, I had them on my tank not even a month, they were to loud for me. I couldn't justify spending $1k for 2 power heads, knowing I could by these for less then $200

Only power head in hadn't tried, which I read are excellent power heads and well liked are the Tunze

Just go to their site and watch the video, the pulse mode itself makes it worth it to me, plus the speed control in 1% increments from 0 -100 in all modes

Running lower is an option, yes.

I have no idea how wide the flow is on the 8's so can't comment there.

I'm also running an MP40 on my 'SPS' end. My 15s are mounted on the back wall, about 6" down from the top, and pointed towards the upper center glass. They are in the 'flow' mode, one master/slave, and set to about 40%.

When I initially had just the 15s on, I had one on either end (on opposite sides front to back) and pointed slightly towards each other. I was getting good flow on each end with lots of chaos in the middle.

Now, I've got a big sand free zone in the front center. As I add rock and coral I imagine I'll be moving them again.

I may have to try this, as I can't run them over 25% or 30% without the same thing happening

Do you have a pic of your power heads?

Well, sent fishstreet and email asking if i could switch the 2 RW15's for 2 RW8's since I haven't been billed yet and assume they haven't shipped yet. If its too late o well, sounds like I could always just dial the 15's way down and they were only a $10 upgrade each over the RW8s.

Also got a DC12000 pump to use as my return pump for the new 180. The over flows are rated 1400-1500 gph, so I assume it will work fine, thought about getting the DC9000 but they didn't seem to carry them. I'm also going to T off a line to the fuge from the return line and possibly run a reactor or two in the future so I figure the extra power cant be bad.

I was looking at the EM200 or coneS CO-2, didn't plan on stocking too heavily. Still not too sure which one of those two is better or what the difference is they are priced fairly similarly.

My back- up plan was the Reef Octopus Classic 200 INT Protein Skimmer. If I coudln't wait out the aquamaxx

This is going to become a Jebao/Aquamaxx love fest!

I got an EM300 recently (my whole setup is new due to a leak in my 3yo 75g and who doesn't upgrade when a tank leaks?) and whoa baby! Quite the beast and the nog is just nasty smelling. Order one now Zer0; you won't regret it.

man hard decision, leaning towards the EM series just cause they are a bit cheaper, only difference seems to be where the pump is located, besides that its the same pump, same air pull same chamber size.....

Last question on the jebao/aquamaxx thread lol.
I assume the EM300 is pretty silent?

Yep. If I have my head under the tank I can hear it but it's just a low hum. Once the doors are closed; nada.
