Exclamation Lower Salinity

I started a nano tank and my salinity is high at about, 40 PPT. How do I lower it? Can I use spring water to lower it?

Take some of your salt water out and then add RO water to lower it

No, don't use spring water. Use rodi, not ro or distilled water.

Typically you can get Ro water at you LFS. However I have two nano tanks I have been using distilled water from the grocery store for years without any problems. I use Crystal brand distilled water but maybe I just get really lucky.

I should've written rodi or distilled, not ro.

Rodi you can get from lfs, distilled water you can buy anywhere.

It's just not as pure as rodi and distilled water. Those two have 0 tds where as spring may have 50 or so.

water has nutrients in it. tap water has a lot. distilled is slightly purer, ro better and ro/di is pure h20 no other nutrients. nutrients help feed everything in our tanks but also is very uncontrolled and in a salt water tank you need to be in control. keep the water as pure as you can and you decide what nutrients to add so you know what is in there.

Distilled & rodi water are pure water. Ro still has some dissolved solids in it. You should only use rodi or distilled in your tank.

I think randy said that sometimes distilled water can have some copper in it, so use with caution.

True, you can run into problems whenever you buy water. That why it is best to have an rodi filter.
