I run my ozone generator full blast on my 100 gallon reef and have been 24/7 for about 35 years. No problems yet and that tank is still going.

I've been using Ozone since 1991, wouldn't run a tank without it. Maintains water quality, and helps prevent crashes/downward spirals caused by a host of reasons, dead fish, overfeeding, etc. Provides wicked clear water too. Can't hurt your tank. I strongly recommend it.

I have always wanted to run it, but scared of the dangers I have read about it, eating certain plastics and getting out into the air inside the house

It is not dangerous and costs nothing to run. The amount of oxone put out by a fish tank ozonizer is nothing. You would smell it right away if it leaks. I am running it for 35 years. Wait a minute! Maybe thats wjhy i am bald!

Running ozone won't cure any problems, but I like it. Water is crystal clear. More then you can imagine. Fish look like they're floating in air. But its not for the casual reefer. You have to understand what you're dealing with. Yes, it can be harmful. I'm out-of-date on the risks but it has been attributed with hearing loss and sterility. Could save you an that vasectomy surgery . As Paul mentioned you will smell it. Same smell as a minor electrical fire or the smell right after a strong thunderstorm. You also get just a whiff of the smell from taking a shower. Have you ever been around of one of those ionization filters? When you're close to them you can detect a mild electrical like smell. Extended exposure can cause nagging headaches too.

If you set it up right, you'll never smell anything. Your nose quickly acclimates to the smell. If you're trying to detect it - leave the room for 10-15 minutes and then come back in and see if the faint odor is there.

I have it running on my main tank now. I wouldn't have it without a redox meter/controller. Too much info to be be gleaned from the redox numbers. The controllers are not much more in $'s, if anything.

If you really get into reefing, than research and consider it. If you're just the casual type then I'd guess it'll be a pain and you wont see the benefits. To me running a CO2 reactor is more of a hassle, but that's just me...

I recommend a O3 reactor where most of the ozone will be processed, then run that effluent thru a carbon reactor. No residual ozone will make it in the air/water and if any does it will be is so low concentration that it will dissipate in the large volume of air in your house. I run 10mg on my 100g tank, that's plenty to achieve clarity and other benefits. Even when I ran that thru the skimmer, I couldn't smell it unless I cranked up the O3. A O3/carbon reactor solves everything. As for wearing plastics, don't worry about it, I have a large ozonizer at my work I use to sanitize sports equipment. In the cabinet I placed a rubber hockey puck and a plastic helmet. They have been in there for 12 yrs for every sanitizing I have done and they haven't deteriorated one bit under high direct exposure to ozone.
