Starfish id help

Saw this guy for the first time today. Must have bee a hitchhiker on a piece of rock. I haven't added any rock in more than a year.

The colors are actually whiteish gray and black.

I am assuming that it is reef safe and not a concern for my fish. I have never had a fish just go missing.

Not sure why, after all this time, he (ok maybe a she) decides to come out in to the open.

Any idea what might have happened to its legs?

They have all been "cut off" to about 1.5 inches in length.

What else is in your tank? Either it is tryng to die or something else is snacking on it. Serpent stars can recover from that but it may take awhile. If you have a fuge area in your sump put it there to allow them to grow back.

Yup, I have already place him in the sump fuge area. To my knowledge, there is nothing in my tank except the fish in my signature and snails. There may be another hitchhiker that I am not aware of.

After the first post, he crawled back in the rocks not to be seen again until when I took the picture yesterday. Before the ninth I had never seen it.

What do you mean it may be trying to die?
