I wouldn't get one, your tank should be at least 6 months old.
Also, how big is your tank and what fish do you have? |

Carpets are a lot of work. I won't have another one. My opinion is they were just not made for a glass box. They move around continuously and get in the way of other things, like plumbing. When they start to go south, it isn't obvious and you have a mess to deal with. Why not consider some torch/hammer/frogspawn coral instead?
Your clowns will host in those and they are a lot less hassle than a carpet. If the clowns were tank bred they might take a long time to host in anything. Seems like that is a trait buried in the tank raised ones. |

Carpets are great, if you are prepared.
Read threads in the anenome section about the type of carpet and the risks associated. They are not for everyone and have particular care requirements including possible treatment.
Don't do it at three months, it'll just make your life tougher. 6 months is ok, the tank needs to be clean zero nitrates and everything else stable. One year even better, I've noticed between 9-12 months everything was Improving.

I like the carpets, but I love the torch and frogspawn corals even more. Out pet store just runs out fast!

let's just say there's a very high chance it will die in your tank.. and if you don't take it out fast enough, it might nuke your whole tank

Rule of thumb is not to rush anything. The more you keep overloading the tank the longer cycles take. Not to mention the lost of $ due to dying live stock. I would wait a min of 6 months before adding any corals then up to 9 months before adding anemones. The parameters needs to stay in check for them to live.

I'm not sure where you're located, but perhaps someone in your area can give you some tips for a reputable local fish store, or might have a torch or frogspawn frag to share. I'm thinking you might want to add one that is aquacultured as your next coral. One of my first corals was a frogspawn that a local fish store sells -- it grows like crazy in all of their tanks, and they've had it for a long time. Even that coral took a little while to adapt to our tank (at the time it was 5 months old, with nitrates and phosphates a little high but coming down slowly) -- I think anything straight from the ocean or a more sensitive species wouldn't have made it. |

The hammer didn't look that good when I got it, but it was only 5$. It's not doing so great though. I'm going to do a 30% water change today. I think one of my clowns has ammonia poisoning:/. It was breathing heavily this morning and it was doing great for 2 weeks. I didn't do a water change this past week so I'm hoping it's better after this change:/

If you have ammonia, you have a problem. You should not even be thinking of adding anything other than looking in to your biological filtration. I have a feeling you are going to kill a few things before you realize this.

What species of "carpet" ?
What other fish do you plan on keeping? What do you have for flow? (( different species of "carpets" have different flow requirements )). Do you have a sandbed? If so, how deep?

I do have a sand bed. It's about 2 inches deep maybe 2.5. I made a hole so that the carpet can stick itself.
I've never had an ammonia spike, but I haven't done a water change in a month:/. I got very busy with life. I'm planning on doing one tonight 30%. Hoping that helps. I have two power heads pointing upwards and the flow is pretty strong. But not too strong where it's being blasted. I'm not sure what species of carpet it is. All I know it is a nice bright salmon pink color and it's not one of those "true carpet anem" |
