Filter media

Hi All, newbie here,I have had a 28 Gal. Nano cube with F/W fish for several years,same location,same lighting,nothing has really changed until a couple of month back I have problems with green algae,I can't seem to clear up,I have tried Tetra algae treatment,I want to change the filter media,and was wondering if there was anything else available for this filter besides that black sponge stuff that came stock with the setup.it hasn't been changed in a long time and I am wondering if that could be any issue.
