Why do we want a night mode on powerheads in our tanks?

I have always wondered what is the purpose of slowing down pumps at night. Real reefs don't get calmer at night and aren't we supposed to be trying to mimic them as best as we can? Why do some people like that option?

Just for one simple reason, the pumps are more quiet.
I have mine in my room, so it's quite nice to have the pumps be significantly more quiet.

Because we can I guess. FWIW, I don't think there is any real benefit... maybe giving the fish a rest from being blasted by our over powered wave makers!

this is the most common answer. that the tank is a lil more calm during night time. but this theory never made sense to me for two reasons....

1. there is still current in the oceans at night

2. almost all fish retreat behind and inside rock at night to sleep. so they are already naturally shielded by the rock from most types of current

I've also heard that the sea is calmer at night which always make me scratch my head.

When I was in the Navy the boat rocked just as much at night as it did during the day. It did not matter where in the worlds ocean I was. Just my observation.

In the ocean fish can easily find places without much current. Blasting your system at 60x turnover might not be so friendly to your fish who can't easily escape it.

It can be 5 foot seas 20 ft above and relatively calm below. I've dove into caves full of sleeping sharks in the middle of 5 foot swells. Was as calm as it could get, almost no water movement unless we created it.

Exactly!!! As a diver myself, I completely agree. Just because the seas are rough on the surface, doesn't mean it's turbulent down below and most prefer calm to rest.

If you own any Ecotech pumps, night mode is to allow you to sleep!

This is a pretty typical day on the reef. We weren't fighting much if any current.
