Closed Loops confusion

I have a 60g (2'x2'x2') aquarium that is confusing me to no end. I currently have a herbie design setup to the sump (directly below the aquarium) but am looking to change to a closed loop + gravity fed sump and am confused as to the best way to design this. I have read quiet a bit about closed systems, in doing so I believe that the intake/return must be either the bottom 2 holes OR have an ugly pipe doing towards the bottom of the tank from a top hole.

If anyone could help me understand the most ideal way to set this up so that I have a clean looking aquarium I would greatly appreciate it (trying to hide as much plumbing as possible).
