IMO this looks like a female wrasse to me. I admittedly never had a leopard wrasse before but have 2 Christmas wrasses one male and one female and the distinction is apparent. The body shape of this wrasse is what makes me think this is a female wrasse.

before you can ask if it's male or female you need to know the species. the Macropharyngodon genus has 12 recognized species with tons of regional variation, many of which look very similar. The term 'leopard wrasse' is kind of a catch all that describes many different species.

How big is it? If it's quite small you're pretty much guaranteed that it's female. If left on it's own it will go through a sex change as it grows and become a 'terminal' phase male.

check out this list and see if yours looks like any of the pics: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/macropharyngodon.htm

That's a male. The females are white with leopard spots. Very distrinct. Yours is a very nice looking male.

Thats what I thought too. A female. But I guess its a male according to the lfs.

I think that's a Macropharyngodon ornatus, AKA Flase leopard or ornate leopard. If so, it's probably female. Does it have a black spot on it's dorsal spine sort of in line with it's pectoral fin?
