Melanarus wrasse with Carpenter wrasse?

Hey all,

Haven't been able to find much info on this, but would there be any hostility with a long term resident melanarus wrasse with a flasher wrasse. I love the color and swimming pattern of the flasher wrasse but also love my melanarus. Any way these could co exist?

Well, here's my .02.

My 125 has:

Vroliks wrasse (Melanarus variant), Yellow Coris, Lime Green wrasse, Christmas Wrasse, McCoskers Flasher, Solar Fairy, Lubbock fairy, Exquisite fairy, and a Cook Islands Scotts. No issues or aggression.

Melanarus are usually easy going fish.

It is also worth noting though, that the more wrasses you have, the less likely they are to kill each other (spread aggression if there is any)

I still don't think you would have issues those two alone, by the way.

Thanks 3ford. Another on the side question for you. How do you maintain a clean tank with so many wrasses as I know they eat snails, hermits and some starfish species even. Any tips?

I have a mel. in with a blue flasher and a mcCoskeri flasher.

They all get along fine. The flashers will flash at each other occasionally, but no real aggresion.

Ahhhhh awesome zero thanks, I think I'm gonna move forward with that purchase then. My LFS has one that's about roughly 3.5 to 4".

If you feed them well, they don't bother CUC too badly. I have a couple starfish, lots of clean up crew, and hermits.

Most of mine are very small. As they grow up, they tend to eat more of that stuff.

But to be honest, CUC don't do a lot to clean your tank (not as much as people say they do). Flow, good skimmers, and phosban reactors and such are far more useful, IMO.

Awesome thanks for the help 3ford!! I think I should look into a phosban reactor in the mean time.

If a melanurus has been established in a tank as the only wrasse for some tme there is a possibility it has developed an intolerance of other wrasses, this is not usually the case but it does happen from time to time. I recommend using a social acclimation box to introduce new wrasses.

Having multiple wrasses does reduce aggression.

Also, as previously stated keeping wrasses well fed seems to diminish their desire to hunt cuc, though flashers and fairy wrasses are not often the culprits in this.
