Smile It's been a while... Getting Back into the Hobby with 12g Nano Cube DX w/LED

hey guys!!

I've been away from the hobby for almost a decade now and I'm back and starting with a humble 12 gallon nano cube with LEDs. I actually purchased it for my girlfriend (as it is valentines day) and she told me she was into colorful corals and seahorses. I am in need of ALL the advice I can get to make this work so I have a few questions:

1. The tank comes with built in filtration, but for a 12 gallon, do I need to get a protein skimmer of some sort?

2. Can I house a couple of seahorses, a few soft corals, and a couple of clown fish in this small space?

3. Is the standard filtration for the 12 gallon nano cube adequate for what I'm trying to do?

All of your suggestions and advice will help immensely. thanks in advance!

1. I know in smaller tanks around your size if you just keep up with water changes of the appropriate size then you don't necessarily need a skimmer. I am sure someone can enlighten you more regarding if you want one with seahorses though.

2. I have researched seahorses a bit and always understood it to be recommended that if you keep seahorses they should be the only species in the tank. A pair of clownfish would max out the bioload in your tank without the seahorses even coming into play and I fear the clown pair would be aggressive. Clownfish are much more aggressive than most people give them credit for.

3.Live rock and sand is your filtration in a saltwater tank, you might need a stronger pump to increase the GPH turnover but all I use my integrated filtration for on my pico is for filterfloss and carbon.

Please take most of what I say with a grain of salt though. Seahorses are not something I have kept hands on before.
