Cycling 75 gallon salt water tank

OK I am trying to cycle my tank. I bought my live rock on Craig's list and kept it in a trash can for about three weeks with power heads and a heater with dead shrimp hoping to start cycling the rock because I didn't know how live it was. I didn't have a test kit while it was in the trash can. Now I finally have my tank set up, live rock in my tank now. I put new water and more dead shrimp and it's been 8 days and I have not has any spike in ammonia or nitrite or nitrate. I don't know if it already cycled while in the trash can. What should I do?

A bit more background from you might help- What was the condition of the rock when you picked it up? And when you say "dead shrimp", do you mean just the shrimp from grocery store? Have you placed any livestock into the tank yet? a bit more detail of your set up might help too- temp, water flow, sump? skimmer? Do you have a lot of bubble and gunk in your skimmer since you set up?
