Macro Algae- Trimming the garden

My refugium is full of macro algae. I have not trimmed it. My nitrates are reading around 5 and phosphate are 0.08 on the Salifert kits. I wonder if it is time to trim some macro algae. Does trimming the macro algae help the algae be more effective?

trimming/trashing it is how you "export" nitrates/phosphates,etc.. from the tank thats bound up in the algae..
