Barebottom or Sand in Sump?

I put a small amount of sand in my sump a while back (not really any intention for it at all i was just sand i have at the bottom of abucket one day after a wate change) and I feel it is "catching" detritus.

I have been debating on removing that small amount of sand or making one compartment a sort of mini "deep sand bed".

I am thinking bare bottom as that would keep things "cleaner" down there, but I would much rather have the detritus build up in my sump and not the DT.

thoughts?
