Are There Ill Affects of Using Too Much Garlic

Hello All,

In all of my research, it implies to soak the fish food in garlic. So my LFS told me that it is not good to use garlic on every feeding. They stated to use garlic about once a week. They said that too much garlic will mess with the organs of the fish. Is this true or have any of you heard of this theory?

Not sure about the organs, but I know garlic breath can be an issue....this may deter mating

Lol---VARY their food. A little garlic seems to be a treat. Like anything else, overdoing it down one track is not necessarily better.

There are studies showing it causes liver damage. I read some of the references, but didn't bookmark them and can't provide them.

I've also heard the possibility of ill effects. Realy it's not necessary unless your fish are very picky eaters. there's some debate over whether it helps with immune sstem or not, but I'm no expert so who knows.

This is a fact, garlic to entice fish to eat is good. Feeding it as some sort of immunity booster or ich cure is just BS

garlic gets the fish to eat food, but I heard it can also hurt them. I have not given anything in my tank in a long time. I have found that some vitamin formulas like vita-Chem to get fish to eat just as good and it's actually helping them. I soak mysis in it before feeding

Thanks for posting those links. I've never used garlic in any form in my tanks. After reading those, especially the first, I don't think I'll start any time soon either.

I agree. There are studies showing garlic is not good for fish long term. My blog has postings about such if you are interested.

Read this ......

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2352039

..... and then decide for yourself. Personally, I never used garlic for my fish; simply never found it useful at all, even as an appetite stimulant. If a fish was going to eat, it would eat; if it wasn't going to, no garlic or anything else would help. IMO.

I think we are trying to emulate nature as close as possible, in lighting, water parameters etc, etc.
How in the world are we giving them garlic, which is not found naturally in the ocean?
Does anyone have an idea how all of this started?

Pretty sure it started in zoos and research institutions as a appetite stimulant and then someone who is a marketing genius made a correlation between garlic and immune system "boosting" and now you see it and is talked about at every LFS you go to basically. Way for them to sell you something that has limited at best effects
