Doing a mixed reef is the plan. I had a 50 gallon setup about 10 years ago that ended up getting infested with flatworms. My son has been showing some interest in the hobby, so i decided to take the plunge and go at it again.

I think it's going to be awesome. Consider picking up a 20L for a quarantine.

Quarenteen tank is definately in the works. Not having one caused the demise of my last tank. Ive never st one up. Can u give me ideas of how and does it have to have strong lights on it for sps and other corals. Can it be taken sown after each use?

I have 2 setups. One for fish and one for corals/inverts.

For fish having two 20gal long tanks (really 15gal) it makes it easy to do the tank transfer method or ttm for short. For these tanks i have a very simple setup that consists of a couple pvc pipes, heater, floating therm, an air stone, and a diy filter powered by an air pump.

If you are planning to house corals in one it needs to be a setup good enough to grow them and cycled. I use a red sea max130 for my coral. The nice thing is you dont need a ton of light in a smaller system. Mine has pc lighting but the corals are kept close to the bulbs and are getting good par.

Check out the stickies in the fish disease forum for more detailed info.

you will probably have to keep the leds at a low percentage on such a small tank

nope, many have had great success with them. They should last a long time running at that power level.

From the standpoint of intensity, yes, you won't be running the G3 Pro at anything like maximum intensity - with a tank that small and shallow, I'd suggest starting at 25% or so. However, you're getting one of the most functional LED lights available as far as spectrum, and because your tank is narrow, you'll be avoiding one of the pitfalls of current modular LEDs, which is spread.

If you want to set up a coral QT, I'd suggest picking up a 20g high and a 10g at Petco's $/gal sale, getting a glass drill bit, bulkhead and CPR overflow from a place like BRS, equipping it with 2 Aquatic Life Marquis 2-lamp T5 HO fixtures. Drilling the tank and setting it up with the 10g as a sump will allow you to buy a highly functional skimmer for a few $$, and avoids the pitfalls of a HOB form factor. Alternatively, you could use an in-tank skimmer such as the Tunze Comline's. A couple of Hydor koralias will do for flow.

It's not unusual with LEDs to NOT run them at 100%.

On my nanoCube I upgraded from the stock JBJ LEDs to a Steve's SPS upgrade kit - it was 96W max in a 28G tank, I never got the LEDs above 50% with that setup.

On my new tank - I'm using 3 48" long BuildMyLED.com fixtures (64 watts per fixture) in a 120G (48x24x24) tank, and they're set at 65% max right now. Fish are happy, corals are growing. I may boost them another 5 - 10% over the next 6 months, but I seriously doubt they'll ever be at 100%.

For quarantining - I use two 10G tanks for tank transfer (4 transfers - 3 days each - 12 days total). Once TTM is done, fish move into a 20G long for 3 rounds of PraziPro (4 days non-medicated w/ carbon filter, 4 days medicated w/ floss filter - 24 days total), then 6 days of observation just for good measure. I've currently got 3 big Orchestriped Cardinalfish ready for round 2 of PraziPro tomorrow. I worried the 10G tanks were too small for 3 big fish, but they were fine in there. The quarantine tank setups are minimalist - an air stone, a sponge filter, a heater and a large PVC elbow. I have a workbench I use for quarantining, and use the bench light for lighting the tanks. Quarantine setups don't need to be expensive. When they're not in use, they're emptied out, sterilized, dried and put on a shelf.

Great Tank,

However will you be running a skimmer. If you are you'll be making your life a hell of a lot easier. I also have a nuvo 16.
