When is coral dead?

I got one of those random frag packs so I could meet the minimum order for free shipping on a fish I wanted. So basically free coral, yay!
They sent me a dendro / sun coral, not yay.

I'm gonna do everything I can to keep it happy, and have been reading up on them. But I know my chances are slim in a 6 month old tank. I would think that when it dies it will foul the water, so I was wondering how I will know when to take it out. And just generally speaking when you pull the trigger on a coral.

Like, with brown jelly on Lps you know it's over, but for other kinds do you guys wait till the flesh is floating away before you give up? I've heard of miracles where it looked totes dead but then revived too, so it's confusing

If it is healthy why do you think you will kill it?
Just target feed it.

its actually a perfect coral for fowl tank because it doesn require strong lighting. just good water flow and feed it like the above said. and 6 months is fine for corals its the min for anenomes too. post a pic, if its dying flesh will fall off like brown slime, not a big pollutant btw

Yellow watchman
I'll post pics tomorrow when they extend, everyone's pretty angry right now from shipping. I'll want to id them so I can set them up right, but it'll be easier to tell the others once they wake up. It was just the sun coral my heart sank cause I've heard how picky they are and even i can tell that one when I see it, no matter how closed up. I do have a nice shady spot chosen and some good clam juice ready for tomorrow night, we shall see.

Thanks for letting me know it won't nuke the tank. I was thinking anything dying coupled with the stress on the bio filter from the new fish might tip a balance and crash my tank.

FWIW, sun corals typically just recede slowly as they die - usually from starvation. Although they can sometimes be coaxed out during the day, normally they open at night, which is when you need to feed them - at least, initially.

Why all these talk about dying..? Just target feed them and no deaths will occur.

Little light and decent flow are pretty lax requirements

Nice looking video! Everytime i target feed my sun coral my cleaner shrimp always tries to snag the food away. I always feed the shrimp first but he just wont stop eating. Anyways Nice looking Sun Coral, that should start growing quite nicely!
