What fans are y'all using?
I'm looking to put some fans inside my canopy that will blow across the water.
I also plan on putting some on the sump as well. But I don't want them to sound like Jet engines that are doing MACH 2. Anybody have any good recommendations?

I've found these to be very quiet, especially on low, and they move a lot of air. I have one in the canopy and one at the sump. I do not hear them with the doors closed. Just another option.

Lowes (Home Depot??) has a desk fan: O2COOL 5-in 2-Speed Desk Fan for $10.
Runs on 110 VAC, computer USB cable or 4x AA batteries. I had mine running for several months. Jury is still out for longevity and effect by salt. Have fun! |

Yea I found that “For Me” room fans can be quieter than computer fans. Of course they vary quite a bit so I went to the store and picked out the quietest of the bunch and the biggest that I could fit in the space. Then I brought it home. I move much more air on low than two or three of the others.
Because it moves more air, I don’t have to cut holes in the cabinet for it. The air flow finds its way in and out of the gaps that are already there. |

I use a pair of 8" clip on Walmart fans. They can drop my 600g - 650g volume about 1* an hour when I need them. The cost under $10 each and have been in service for 4 years now. They are also set to come on at 82 (via my Apex) which is the max my tank is allowed to get in the summer. I'm also in So. Cal and my house humidy is 27% according to my Ecobee3 thermostat. Not sure what is in the aquarium light soffit but that air is ducted out of the house via a really high CFM 10" rotron fan so I'm sure the humidity is fairly low in there too. Humidity has a big impact on the efficiency of evaportaive cooling so your results may vary.

I thought that these fans were a great idea...
http://premiumaquatics.com/products/...FaJj7AodM1QAjA They have a temp sensor and ramp the fan up the hotter it gets. When not needed, the fans slow to a crawl.

This is the best answer for moving air quietly in and out of a canopy

I may build my own fan system. I guess if fan last a few years, at the price, i'm ok with it.

It's just the humidity, since salt doesn't evap very little gets into them. You should get a couple years out of a good fan.

how good are fans at cooling? i am building a larger tank and will have a canopy on it. i have never had a canopy before but am thinking i will need to add a fan to blow air into it from the back. i assume i can hook it up to my Apex to come on if the temp gets to high. I have LEDs so hope it doesnt get super hot.

Fans work really good my tank does not get over 82 usually just 78 in the summer and we are cheap w/ the A?C here and it gets hot outside. I use a clip on fan w/ a controller.
When I have dual 175's in a canopy on a 120 tank, I think I had 2 4'' ice cap fans and two 3'' fans on a controller and my tank never hot hot, all fans blew in. |
