How to clean bh-100 Reef Octopus classic

Does anyone know if this thing can come apart to clean the sponge which comes installed on the back?

I took it off the tank and dumped some vinegar in the back to break down the detritus and plan on washing it thoroughly.

Is there a better way?

You can unscrew the inside and outside of the outlet pipe from each other and pull it out. Then you can get your hand in there and take out the sponge. You don't really need the sponge or the acrylic plate it sits on, those are primarily there for people who want to throw a bag of media in that compartment. If you keep the sponge in there just remove it and clean monthly.

Edit: I thought this said bh1000 not bh100, I assume they have similar construction however
