Help!! Lysol? By my tank.

So someone just sprayed the whole room with Lysol and frebreeze and asap I covered the tank with a towel then blanket. What are the chances my tank will die? It was covered like 31 seconds after. I am so worried. Any advice?

I'd run something to pull out ammonia, as cleaning products are full of it. Good luck hope everything turns out ok

Pour an emergecy dose of PRIME into the tank asap.

+1 warm damp towels should do the trick..and prime for any crazy Amonia spikes

It's probably minor, but caution the family member with the Lysol can to advise you before spraying.

Wonder how many ppm you could pick up that way. I would think it has to be pretty low because you have to be able to use this stuff around people with out getting them sick. On top of that any that gets in the water will end up even weaker which you really don't want any in your tank in the first place.

I read a thread where something similar was sprayed in the room containing the tank. This happened to someone on this forum a few years ago. To cut a long story short some of the bacteria-killing agent entered the tank causing the tank to crash.

Odds are it's probably a minor incident. However, I'd prepare enough water for a large water change and perform a couple tests for ammonia. Watch your inhabitants for odd behavior such as heavy breathing or lethargic behavior.

What you really have to watch out for more than a casual spritz of Lysol is somebody using CarpetFresh, which stays in the carpet, or burning (as a habit) scented candles. Or using Windex to clean the glass and letting it drip into the tank. I use Sprayway, which is a glass cleaner we even take on trips, because it can strip bugs off a windshield in Texas heat---but it also works so well because it contains petroleum. I spray it on a cloth in the other room and use it sparingly on the tank face.

Lesson to take away from this: never spray anything in the room with the tank unless you're putting on perfume/ cologne even then I wouldn't do it too close to the tank.

Diversion from main topic but for tank glass cleaning there is a vinegar based windex product, I still spray it away from the tank but I've always assumed if it were to get in there it would have a lot less effect.
Good Luck with the Lysol, and always warn anyone staying at your house to stay far away from the tank with any cleaning supplier or aerosols. My brother once sprayed insect spray near my tank (no ill effects) and his attitude of I'll replace anything that dies changed when I started adding up the costs of livestock!
