Nothing beats an apex and its controllability. Of course it does come at a high price, but you will find, nothing in this hobby that's actually worth buying is cheap.

...but if you just can't afford the Apex at this time, the Reef Keeper will get you started and it will perform the basic tasks you need. In the end though you'll probably end up purchasing a full Apex for the advanced options it offers.

Certainly not a stupid question, there is a big price difference and you should be aware of what you get for the extra money.
Here is a good thread comparing the two: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...light=rke+apex |

Apex for sure. Also, periods and question marks work wonders.

Apex. Worth upfront cost. even the Jr. version provides a high level of control functionality.

Keep in mind that's from 2013. The DA Archon seems very nice. But DA'a support is still not very good. Their beta testers are awesome and fix most people's issues on these forums and theirs.
I used a reefkeeper for years and it worked. I could never depend on their support. It was awful even up to the end and why I finally switched to an Apex. I tried to give them my money for an Archon and time and again they failed to follow through and this was after the archon was released. I finally had enough and bought an Apex. Not a week later they finally followed through asking for payment. I told them plainly I was no longer interested. So far I could not be happier with my decision and have loved everything about the Apex and have been able to do more with its advanced programming and many modules they have available. I've even had to deal with neptune's support already and it was like dealing with an actual company. I submitted an email. I got a ticket number and a link to a site with my ticket details, progress, and where I could updated the ticket. I got a person assigned to the ticket( with in a couple hours!) and an email with things to do (my base unit stopped responding). They even offered remote hands on support. After determining a factory reset image wasn't going anywhere I got a new base unit. If this was DA I'd have waited all week before maybe getting a response and it would have been to some link in a forum which by that time I might have gotten help from some beta tester first. If I had to rma I might have gotten lucky and gotten an rma processed with in a couple days or at worse months. Both have happened to me with DA. Terrible support.

I love my apex. I like that it can grow with me. I got the gold setup on sale and I'm glad I got it.

From what I've been told, Black Friday is about the only time most of the MAP items (Neptune, Ecotech, Kessil, etc) go on sell.
