Ostracods reef safe?
Hey there,
Just recently I discovered what I first thought to be snail babies, in my display tank. After studying them for quite some time, I noticed what looked like legs on the little guys. They are smaller than copepods, triangular in shape (similar to a snail), moves faster than a snail, but slower than a pod. Could this be Ostracods? And if it is, should I be concerned? http://www.reefdup.com/ Ostracod referance: http://www.lionfishlair.com/ Thanks! Moeshi |

It appears that they are harmless. Are they a rare occurrence, since nobody has any advice?

Do you have trochus snails? They look like babies. Very common.

Thank you so much for the link, @Shawn O, I will try my luck there.
@ChimolaFish One would think so, but I don't have anything but nassarius snails in this tank. The two pictures provided both claim, on their respective cited cites, that they are pictures of ostracods. Mine look exactly like the small white dots on the glass. The one thing that convinces me it's not snails, is their ability to turn in sharp corners. |

Ah, well, as long as they're reef safe, all is good, haha.

Think of ostracods as just another pod. Totally reef safe.

Thank you, Bill.
I had the chance to take a look at them under the microscope, and they are indeed ostrocods. Not white with a purple hue as seen on the first picture, but instead white with black patterns and yellow appendages like the specimens found i fresh water. |
