Add another tang, choices ?
Tank is 6x3x3
Been set up for 4 + years. Current stocking Emperor Angel 8inches Regal tang 5 inches Yellow tang 4 inches Choc tang 4 inches Bristle tooth tang 4 inches Clown wrasse adult Leopard Wrasse adult Cleaner wrasse adult 2 fire fish 4 clowns Black back butterfly 12 chromis blue Coral beauty 2 gobies (Bert and ernie) Enormous sandsifting star fish Blue star fish Want to add another tang, unicorn, orange shoulder, Achilles, powder blue ? Something that will deal with my very grumpy emperor angel, all my fish have been in there for years, so I'm a little concerned with aggression. Thoughts guys ? |

Your tank is large enough, but with an establish fish population I suspect it will be very difficult, I just don't see the existing tangs welcoming a newbie.

Vlamingy tangs are awesome! Should have no problem as long as you get one over 5" or so

I'm sure others have way more knowledge on the subject but, I think adding a new tang to a tank with that many established tangs, is going to be a gamble, at best. There could be some clues given by your current tangs' behavior. Is one dominant? Are they all more-or-less evenly matched, giving each other a little bit of a hard time periodically? Have they been together so long they completely ignore each other? I would think #2 would be the situation most likely to be successful but it would still be far from a guarantee. I might also try adding a smaller tang (one more likely not to be perceived as 'competition' for dominance rather than trying to add a large tang that can 'hold his own'). Again, I'm sure others have way more experience so take the above with a grain of salt. Good luck.

a big naso or Achilles or both adding two might help.

Well I will just say this, that tank has several fish that should be growing every year; as they grow the behavior will become more pronounced, the swimming of some will use more open water, some of them may start to fight. I would not want to complicate this by adding more to that mix.
Some tangs can grow an inch a year and reach a foot long, some angels can be a foot and a half long. Yes this tank is large but is it large enough for the fish you have? Not when they are all adults In my opinion. It' not just gallons it's also swim space and can they get far enough apart to not feel territorial aggression kick in. Also I am wondering if the growth so far is normal, did they start as really small fish? Are they getting enough food? Are the dominant ones getting all the food and holding back growth of others? Ok I may be wrong but that is what I wonder about with the information given.

The fish are all "over weight" that's coming from the local fish store who pops in once a mo th for tea, and my friends, who have similar fish, I have owned all these fish since they were very small, most of them used to live in a 93 cube, I also have a very large 6 foot sump which is full of live rock, critters and algae, there is a great deal of swimming space available, most of the fish listed above spend their day swimming through the cave and rock formation, yes there are fish like the clowns who never move from the bottom corner where they believe they are king, the gobies only come out at night, the chromis swim mid to upper level, the big boy swims where he likes, the big regal pretty much swims where she likes.
I believe my tangs are about the right size for their age, my big boy is heading towards the foot mark and will probably out grow this tank at that point, (10 foot tank is already designed and approved, although I am trying to have it built in my new house, as this would require building in the house and that's never a good thing to try and move EVER. I feed the fish 2 times a day with frozen (3 cubes of each food), 4 times a day (2 pellets, and 2 dried, through timers) I use 4 sheets of nori, and everyone says I over feed, the 1st feed of the day is a frenzy , after that things are very mellow, all food is gone in a matter of a couple of minutes. |

I hope you did not take offense at my questions, this is posted in "new to the hobby" and between the fish count and the time given and where you posted I just was a bit skeptical. I think you have plenty of fish in that tank, imho I think i's stick with what is there and look at what you will do with moving to the new setup and what fish to add when you have it up and running. that's my op anyway.

Adding a new fish to an established population is always a risk. You can shift the odds in favor of the newcomer by running it through a period if QT to ensure that its eating and has a healthy weight. When adding a 'conditioned' tang to my tank, and employing a bit of common sense with choice of fish, I'm successful about 80% of the time. 20% failure does not mean fish demise, necessarily, just removal.
