Not happy with noise from Glass-Holes. Convert to a Bean Animal?

Has anyone converted a Glass-Holes overflow to a Herbie or Bean Animal overflow? I see so many people say how quiet the GH overflow is. I have a recent version so it came with airlines in the elbows, Enkamat, and the internal baffle plate. The box itself is perfect, just a little trickle sound. Its the two drain pipes that sound like waterfall/toilet into the sump. I have the outlet pipes 4" below the surface going in to a filter sock. I have played with reducing the flow and the airlines and it does not change so I think I need go a different route. I wish I would have went with the synergy overflow.

The big question is how close are the drilled holes to matching in the GH vs Synergy?

Might have to much outlet pipe in the water giving a harder time to purge air, might want to try and adjust the pipe outlet depth to see if that helps.

My GH 1500 overflow was kinda noisy, too. I played with the airlines and got it to quiet down a bit, but not enough.
Sounds like I have the same setup - Drain pipes about 4" under water into filter socks.

What I ended up doing was this:

I used an airline valve on the end of the GH airlines.
Like this one: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-...550152920.html

They don't fit well into the GH airlines, so I used a 1/2" piece of RO/DI line as a reducer. Put the valve into the RO line and then put the RO line into the GH airline - good tight fit. Also seems to work best if you remove the screw completely from the valve. Then you still have to find the sweet spot for the least noise.

Worked for me.

But, I too am interested to know if the holes would line up for a Synergy box.

That was something I read about also. I used my finger to fully block, partially block, and removed the airlines all together and it didnt make a difference either way.

I dont see how the depth of the drain pipes would make a difference but I will play with it.

The GH overflows are not quiet if you run them anywhere near their stated flow rates... It's tough to get them very quiet unless you are running them down around half of what they are sold as.

Good product, and they will flow whatever rate they are marketed as, just not very quietly.

How long have you had it up and running? Mine was loud when I first set it up but within 2 or 3 days it started getting quieter. What return pump are you using? Do you have any kind of valve of the return line?

Its only been running for a few days and with no bio load yet so I will give it some time. I dont have any valves on the return right now.

I've had my GH for years and I've lately been wondering about converting it to a BA or herbie. It's on a 90g with only around 400 gph flow. I've got it quieter by adjusting the length of tubing coming out of the top of the first 90 degree elbow. Then I ran 3/4 braided tubing down to 1/2 inch below my water line in the sump with a filter sock. I still have a trickling sound at the overflow box.

The tank is drilled for two other holes. I thought about having the GH be a full siphon and then use the other holes for a trickle and emergency backup.

Is your aquarium in a space where you could add an external box to house 3 drains for a BA overflow?

I am setting up a 40b and will be leaving my drilled holes bare (no bulkhead) and setting up a glass box on the rear for 3 drains.

Give it time it will get better. Also I would put a valve on the return so you can dial it in so it's perfect.

On the plus side I found a huge contribute factor. The drain pipes (ultra flex pvc) are a bit of pain and don't want to leave their previous coil shape. So tension has them pressed against the sump which resonates and is causing a majority of the noise. I need to find a way to get them off the wall of the tank. Maybe a spong or something. Then if I can get the surging sound to stop I think it will be ok.

Also having them terminate too far below the water makes it harder for the pipes to flush air, which makes surging worse.

I just wanted to confirm. It was the plumbing resting on the tank resonating causing all the noise. I have it temporarily held away from the tank with a coat hanger until I can re do the plumbing using hard pvc and 45's.

Did anyone figure out if the synergy 16" will fit the existing holes for the glass holes 1500 overflow. I need to change it cant take the noise anymore.
